Why do you need a funeral plan?

There are several things to take into consideration when a family member passes away abroad, for example: the language barrier, dealing with the local authorities, the speed of the funeral service, bank accounts being frozen, final wishes being implemented, and of course the eventual funding of the funeral which can be substantial.

All of which, sadly, brings immense emotional strain to any family member.

Your Frequent Questions Answered

We understand that you will have a lot of questions… and our advisors will answer them all as they arise, but here are some of the more common concerns that often come up when we speak to people.

Pre-planning and paying you’re your funeral at today’s prices ensures final wishes are followed and respected and the funeral fees stipulated in your plan are guaranteed to be paid, no matter how prices rise in the future

Most importantly you can take comfort knowing that your family is spared the emotional and financial burden of trying to organise your funeral at one of the most difficult times of their lives.

Your Golden Leaves Funeral Plan doesn’t just cover you for your death in your country of residence. If you currently reside in Spain, Portugal, Balearic or Canary Islands,  Cyprus or Gibraltar, your plan will automatically have dual cover with a UK set of arrangements set up for you at the time of original purchase.

Dual Cover

This means you have fully guaranteed cover in Spain, and we fully guarantee funeral director costs in the UK.

However, you do need to be aware that while we contribute towards the cost in the UK there could be 3rd party disbursements for example doctors’ fees, minister fees, plots, headstones, burials etc.

Global Portability

this means that for example if you were on holiday or if you had relocated and your funeral took place in Germany for example you have 1 of 3 options:

  1. You can call us on the emergency helpline, and we would kick into play with immediate effect, we would arrange the service with the local funeral director and contribute your funds towards the cost. If there were any shortfalls the next of kin would be responsible for the balance.
  2. You could cancel the plan and have a refund minus 20% of the plan purchase price and arrange the funeral service yourself.
  3. Or if you have travel insurance, they usually have a service to repatriate the deceased back to base.  We would then co-ordinate with the insurance company for airport collection either in the UK or Spain, putting the plan into action as per the clients wishes.

Yes, all of our plans are fully guaranteed in your country of residence (Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Canary and Balearic Islands) and have dual cover with the UK.

Your plans can also be utilised globally, this means if you are traveling though or relocate to France for example you can still call the emergency number and we will kick in to play straight away, please do be aware that if there are any shortfalls in cost from country to country your next of kin would be responsible for any outstanding balance payment.

No, the international plans have not been effected by Brexit, they are still fully guaranteed in your country of residence, have dual cover with the UK and can be utilised globally.

While the disbursements are related to the plan being used in the UK, and we do contribute towards these costs along with your funds growing in line with RPI, there could be shortfalls to take into consideration.

For example 3rd party disbursement items, such as burial and you and plot, if you require a headstone, a minister, family cars, etc.

Yes all mileage to transport the deceased is included within your country of residence and within the UK.

This is because they are two completely different countries, with completely different sets of rules and regulations that are required for when a person passes away.

Yes we do – and all our paperwork is in English.

We understand that language barriers can make organising a funeral quite difficult if your friends or family are not fluent speakers of the language.

You call the 24-hour emergency help line no 800 098 309, we will ask you a few simple questions about the deceased such as, name, location and plan ref no, we will then notify the bereavement co-ordinator.

You will then receive a call from our bereavement co-ordinator who will be your point of contact thereafter, he will then talk you through the next stages step by step.
